Take Pictures with Your Photo Scanner!
Anyone with a flatbed Photo Scanner can create great macro photography art. I recently discovered an amazing photo scanner technique for taking these close-up pictures. I was searching for macro photography tips in a magazine. The pictures in the article were so hyper-real, I was intrigued.
The process is called 'no-camera photography', 'scanner art' and 'scanography'.
Would my cheap Epson scanner work? I was willing to try. I placed a branch, from a small tree in the yard, on the glass bed and hit 'SCAN'.
This is one of my early attempts (no Photoshop) at Scanner Magic:
My head filled with thoughts of how to use my own image scanner. I had a few kids' craft ideas; but I also thought of how I could use this photo method with my writing. As a magazine writer, good close-up photography is a tremendous asset.
Where can you use Scanner Magic?
- Close-up pictures of flowers
- Great shots of small equipment innards
- Create photo art with rich black backgrounds
- Wonderful pictures for t-shirts, mugs etc.
- Kid's crafts using photography
- Digital scrapbooking . . . and the list goes on.
No new software required.
A Computer and a flatbed Photo Scanner
are all you need!
If you can 'scan and save' a document, you can enjoy 'scanography'.
By now, if you're anything like me, you're thinking "there must be more to this." There is more, but not much more to get you started.
All of the images on this site were created by me with the equipment described herein. (And I'm a person who struggles with software that is supposed to make a job easy!) If you're an experienced computer user, your Scanner Magic experience may be even more exotic and creative.
Fair Warning: Proceed with caution. Scanning may become habit forming.
