Photo Scanner Artists

seed pictures, Tabebuia, scanography, scanner photography

Photo scanner artists may be professional photographers with a limited interest in scanning; photographers who specialize in the field of scanography or amateur photographers with an exciting passion.

Scanographer backgrounds are as highly varied, as is their work. Some have art credentials, others are novices with talent and persistence.

Some create very traditional looking flower bouquets; some have soft abstract visions, others have bizarre computer images.

This simple composition of a Tabebuia seed pod fell apart on my first effort. Fortunately, there were lots more seeds on the tree.

Since experimenting with my own flatbed photo scanner, I appreciate the work of skilled scanographers even more. I've visited many scanography sites. As in any art form, some are exquisite, others are a bit off the wall (for my taste).

Some of My Favorites

I mentioned Patri's how-to generosity previously, but you may have missed her art. Her amazing bouquets are mostly from her yard. Look closely at the compositions.

"Classical imagery from nature captured without the use of traditional artists or photographers materials..." - Patri Feher

Katinka refers to her art as a "non-photographic technique". Some may disagree, but her images are definitely fine botanical art!

"It is a radically new digital aesthetic involving both new hardware (the scanner and the inkjet printer), and software (Adobe Photoshop), that allows for a new naturalism fusing nature and technology."
- Katinka Matson

Andrea's 'Pink Dogwoods' remind me of spring, my Dad and growing up in Maryland. Her scan site is uniquely designed.

"I began creating these images at a time in my life in which the symbolism of flora as a metaphor for the fleeting nature of human life had tremendous resonance for me." - Andrea Kemler

Doris' art work answers the question 'is scanography really art'? Her simplicity reaches out to my minimalist tendencies.

"I’m especially interested in the visual rhyming relationships between natural forms . . ." - Doris Mitsch

Carol's site and images are very creative. Use the Slide Show version in full page for best results.

"... I paint with the artist's newest tool, the computer." - Carol Rollick

Janet's specialty is photographing works of art for other artists, galleries and museums.

For me, her personal collection of award winning scanography is the highlight of her site. - Janet Dwyer

Vinc does not consider himself a professional photo scanner artist. His field of espertise is black and white photography. I include him here because his overall work is amazing.

From Vinc's scanner page be sure to view his other photography.
- Vincent de Groot

Dawn's work has been published in Popular Photography magazine as well as in other books and newspapers.

"I started using a scanner because I wanted to see if I could produce larger files than my camera is capable of ... I found I could do some rather surprising things with the scanner that I couldn't with a camera." - Dawn LeBlanc

John's fine art collection of scanner images is divided into two groups 'classic' and 'museum'. They definitely classify him as a photo scanner artist.

"My newer work is about a deeper exploration. It is more about experimentation, and point of view. Here I’ve often incorporated everyday objects into the compositions -- simple black straws, lingerie, newspaper, lentils ..." - John Grant
