Ideas for Scout Crafts

Using No-Camera Photography

Scout crafts have been a mainstay of scouting programs since the beginning. As technology has developed, merit badge requirements have adapted. From Daisies to older scouts, today scouts of all ages have amazing computer skills. Using these skills, Scanner Magic provides a unique opportunity to make your next merit badge exciting!

The following image is an example of what happens when you scan three dimensional items . . . in this case, a group of small toy frogs. (Leave the scanner lid up, frogs' backs down.)

Some Thoughts to Get You Started

Which merit badge is next on your list?

Use no-camera photography to make it more exciting!

  • Artistic Crafts
  • Art to Wear
  • Computers
  • Hobbies
  • Photography
  • Technology
  • Writing
  • Plant life
  • Boy and Girl Scout scrapbooking

Scanner Magic is perfect for any projects using photography . . . from pictures for t-shirts and mugs to photos for albums and magazine articles.

Maybe you could write a report explaining the basic parts and operation of a scanner and how it works. Find out the differences between a film camera, a digital camera and a photo scanner as a camera. Wrap it all up with a demonstration!

Photo scanner images become hyper-real photos!

Here is a Scanner Magic image created from simple objects placed on the flatbed scanner glass.

Before you start working on your photo scanner merit badge, share your plan with your counselor. As with any scout project, get your counselor's input and approval before you proceed. Then create your Scanner Magic!

Note to Counselors:

There is some controversy as to whether scanography is photography.

I have no doubt Scanner Magic is photography.
